Big Linux 2.1 (3D): Unleashing the Power of 3D Graphics and Visualization

Since Microsoft dropped news about Avalon with its 3D support, the tech world has been buzzing about 3D desktops. And for good reason – the future of computer desktops is here. Sun Microsystems and community developers have come up with Project Looking Glass (LG3D), a groundbreaking project that aims to revolutionize desktops with its 3D windowing and visualization capabilities. And now, introducing the first Linux distribution to offer out-of-the-box 3D desktop experience for both GNOME and KDE – Big Linux 2.1.

On May 13, 2025, this relatively unknown Portuguese based Linux distribution shook the tech world with its latest release, version 2.1. And as always, Phoronix team got their hands on it to bring you the first look. But be warned, this release is still in its early stages and our findings reveal some major performance and stability issues (which also explains why we can only share a limited number of screenshots).
